Epoxy Garage Floors: Cost, Process and What to Expect

Gray flake epoxy garage floor with matching coated stem walls

An epoxy garage floor typically costs $6.50 to $8 per square foot with Golden Concrete Company, with a $3,000 job minimum. Most garage floors take a few days from surface preparation to the final top coat. Here is what you get for that price, how the process works, and whether your floor is a good candidate.

What an epoxy coating does

  • Resists oil, road salt and chemical stains
  • Stops concrete dusting, so the floor is easy to sweep and mop
  • Brightens the garage by reflecting light
  • Decorative flake hides dirt and adds grip

In Colorado, the biggest everyday benefit is winter. Cars carry snow and salt into the garage, and on bare concrete that slush soaks in. A coated floor keeps it on the surface, where you can squeegee it out.

What it costs

ItemTypical price
Epoxy coating$6.50 to $8 per sq ft
Job minimum$3,000
New garage slab first, if neededAbout $14 per sq ft

The final price depends on the size of the floor and how much crack and surface repair it needs. Details on our epoxy floors page.

How an epoxy floor is installed

  1. Surface preparation. The concrete is mechanically prepared so the coating can bond. This step decides how long the floor lasts.
  2. Crack and joint repair. Cracks, pits and spalled areas are filled.
  3. Base coat. The colored base coat goes down.
  4. Decorative flake. Color flakes are broadcast into the wet base coat.
  5. Clear top coat. A protective top coat seals the floor.

Choosing a flake color

Flake comes in blends ranging from neutral grays to tans and blues. Popular blends include Domino, Wombat, Shoreline, Orbit and Outback. Grays hide tire marks and road grime well; tans suit basements and warmer rooms.

Is your floor a good candidate?

Coatings need sound, dry concrete. A floor with moisture coming up through the slab, heavy settling or widespread damage may need repair or a new garage floor first. New concrete needs to cure for about a month before it can be coated. We check your floor during a free consultation and tell you honestly whether it will hold a coating.

Why DIY kits often peel

Thin do-it-yourself kits rolled over unprepared concrete are the usual cause of peeling and hot-tire pickup. Without proper surface preparation, the coating has nothing to grip. That preparation step is most of what you pay a professional for.

Common questions

  • Is epoxy slippery? A smooth coating can be slick when wet. Flake and anti-slip additives give the surface texture.
  • Can you do basements too? Yes, as long as the slab is dry and sound.
  • What about the rest of the garage? We also pour and replace driveways and aprons, so the whole approach can be done at once.
