What is included in a driveway replacement

A driveway replacement is more than new concrete on top. The per-foot price covers the full job:

  • Tear-out and haul-away of the old driveway.
  • Subgrade repair. Most driveways need some soil under the old slab removed and replaced with crushed gravel or recycled concrete, compacted well so the new slab moves as little as possible.
  • Forms and reinforcement, with the slope set so water drains away from your garage and house.
  • A strong mix. We typically pour driveways with a 4,500 PSI mix with micro fiber for added strength, about 4 inches thick.
  • Broom finish and control joints for traction and to keep any cracking in clean, planned lines.

What makes a driveway cost more or less

  • Size. Larger driveways usually cost less per square foot because setup and mobilization are spread over more concrete.
  • Tear-out. Removing old concrete is why replacement costs more per foot than a brand-new driveway.
  • Base work. Soft or washed-out soil under the old slab takes more excavation and gravel to fix.
  • Access. If a concrete truck cannot reach the pour, the concrete is pumped. Pumps for hard-to-access areas start at $450.
  • Finish. Sand-finished and stamped concrete cost more than a standard broom finish.
  • Slope. Steep driveways, common in foothills areas like Evergreen and Genesee, take more forming and care.

Should you repair or replace your driveway?

Hairline cracks are normal and are not a reason to replace a driveway. Replacement makes sense when sections have sunk or heaved, wide cracks have one side higher than the other, the surface is flaking from freeze-thaw and de-icing salts, or water drains toward the garage. Our concrete removal and replacement page covers the signs in more detail.

How long it takes and when you can drive on it

Many driveway replacements are torn out, formed and poured in as little as a day, and most residential projects take 2 to 4 days. You can usually walk on new concrete after 24 to 48 hours. Keep cars off for about 7 days, and keep heavy trucks and trailers off for about 28 days while the concrete reaches full strength. More answers are in our concrete FAQ.

Ways to save on a new driveway

  • Combine projects. Pouring a driveway, front walk and steps at the same time usually lowers the cost per square foot because the crew and concrete are already on site.
  • Choose the finish where it counts. Some homeowners pour a broom-finished driveway with a stamped border or a stamped front walk, which adds curb appeal without stamping the whole slab.
  • Fix the base once. Paying for proper base repair now costs less than replacing a driveway that settled because the base was skipped.
